Robert and Frances Raikes, who built Treberfydd, were keen on creating an outdoor landscape as striking as their new home, and so instructed the well-known Victorian landscape architect William A. Nesfield to work alongside their architect in the 1840s. As a result, every room in the house offers a unique view of Nesfield's work.

Celebrated for his contributions to Kew Gardens and Regent's Park in London, Holkham Hall in Norfolk and Castle Howard in Yorkshire as well as dozens of other country houses, Nesfield brought his signature themes of elegant parterres, vistas and sweeping lawns to Treberfydd House.

Later generations felt his elaborate plantings were too costly to maintain and the parterres were dug out in the 1920s. But the sweeping lawns and extraordinary trees selected by Nesfield - including sequoias, Atlantic cedars and a magnificent cedar of Lebanon - remain. Visitors can also enjoy Nesfield's ‘Long Walk’ - a path which stretches from the old croquet lawn through to the nursery in the Walled Garden Treberfydd.

The Walled Garden Treberfydd

Treberfydd's 18th-century walled garden has been leased by a plant nursery, the Walled Garden Treberfydd.
